The Forest in Arolla

The two main species are the MELEZE (foreground, light green)and the AROLLE (background, dark green). Pictured in the Spring (2005 06 11).

The earth layer is very thin and the forest is not very dense. The ground is covered with MYRTILLES and RHODODENDRONS. AROLLES are on the left and MELEZES on the right

Multi-century AROLLE trunk. In the early 1900, the arolles were exploited for resin. Many trees still carry clearly visible traces.

The forest in the beginning of Autumn (2004 10 10). The MELEZES become yellow color. They will loose their needles for the winter.
